Amazon Changes the Rules Right Before Easter: Customers Should Act Promptly

Just a few days before Easter, Amazon is suspending a rule that previously protected your privacy. That’s why you should definitely take a close look at your settings now. Otherwise third parties will soon know where you live.

Easter is the next big round for shopping. Children, in particular, will be showered with sweets and toys on April 5. Amazon advertises spring offers until mid-March. If you don’t want to begin shopping right away but want to view and compare options first, you can probably use the Amazon wishlist function and save your favorite products. Be careful, though! You should take action by March 25 at the latest and inspect your wish list settings. The reason for this? A minor but momentous change could be your undoing.

Wishlist Change Leaks Your Data

From March 25, a change will come into force at Amazon that could make your private address accessible to third parties. It concerns the wishlist function. Many people use it privately to save certain products for purchase later. Others share it with family and friends to indicate the following: “This is what I want for my birthday”. Until now, you could exclude items from external retailers — so-called third-party sellers — and only allow products shipped directly from Amazon. This will no longer be possible from March 25.

The shipping giant wants to enable a larger selection for everyone. However, access to Marketplace items in the wishlist also opens the door to abuse. This is because the name and delivery address of users who have shared their wish lists or saved them as public are now visible to third-party providers.

How Everyone Can Obtain Your Address

Amazon announced the following change via email to affected customers: “When this change takes effect, gift purchasers will be able to purchase items sold by third-party sellers from your list and your delivery address will be shared with the seller for fulfillment.” And not only that: “During the delivery process, your address may become visible to gift purchasers through delivery updates and tracking information.”

This could be particularly unsettling for public figures if stalkers suddenly hunt down their private address under the pretext of buying them a gift. You should also consider whether and with whom you want to share this information. Amazon recommends you do not enter your home address, but rather, use a parcel store or a PO box. You can also make sure that you don’t add any Marketplace items to your wish list. And if you want to be really consistent, you can also delete all products and lists from your account.
