While Subaru is not a frequent name on vehicle safety recall lists, they are certainly not immune. The latest issue affects their newest hybrid models, and more concerningly, these vehicles pose a significant fire risk to drivers and the public.
According to a report published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), nearly 70,000 hybrid Subaru vehicles are being recalled due to fire concerns. This recall includes approximately 19,500 units of the 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid and about 51,707 units of the 2025 Subaru Forester Hybrid.
Subaru Hybrid Models at Risk of Sudden Fire
The documentation reveals that the safety recall was issued because an improper seal in the fuel filler cap may lead to fuel leaks. Specifically, when the gas tank is full or near-full and the vehicle is parked in high ambient temperatures or pressures, fuel could overflow from the filler neck. This significantly increases the risk of fire, especially if the vehicle is near an ignition source.
The timeline shows that Subaru first received a technical report in December 2025. Following internal testing that successfully reproduced the fault, the automaker moved forward with the recall. Fortunately, there have been no reported injuries or property damage related to this issue yet. However, out of an abundance of caution, Subaru is advising owners to park their vehicles outside.
Free Fix for the Fuel Filler Cap
Subaru has stated that the remedy involves replacing the filler cap gasket and adding an O-ring for a more secure seal. Owners can schedule an appointment with authorized Subaru dealers and service centers to have the fix performed free of charge. Formal notification letters are expected to be sent to impacted owners beginning March 25, 2026.
Until the remedy is performed, owners are strictly advised to avoid filling their gasoline tanks to the full level. It is recommended to keep the fuel level at approximately half a tank. Most importantly, owners should avoid parking in garages or enclosed structures while the fire risk remains.
Owners can visit the NHTSA website and use their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to confirm if their specific Subaru is impacted. Further details and documentation are available on the portal.
Subaru’s recall follows a series of larger industry issues, including recent fire-related recalls for nearly a million BMW and Ford vehicles caused by faulty engine valves.
